Street Artist Obey to Reveal Massive Mural in Dubai

With just a few more days to go until the multi-sensory Meet d3 event begins and an outstanding roster of regional and international artists starts flying into Dubai, it’s not a stretch to say that we’re holding our breaths. Following yesterday’s article on Saudi hip hop artist Qusai, here’s the second of four highlights we’ll be laying out for you this week.

While headliner John Newman—with his 270 million and counting Can You Love Me Again YouTube views—is understandably geared up to be the event favorite, there are other artists to look out for, including American cult street artist Shepard Fairey, also known as Obey.

We discovered Obey a few years ago when his stickers “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” started turning up in the streets, which led to the campaign “Obey Giant”—complex frescos of his illustrations, which, in turn, made Fairey a giant of the street art world. His most recognized work is probably his Barack Obama HOPE poster, which he created for the Presidential campaign in 2008 (Obama penned him a thank you note).

His unique style, now a recognized street symbol for peace, is often imitated. Today, he is a star of urban culture, and his frescos are frequently portrayed in magazines.

Obey and his team will be in Dubai for the first time to create an enormous 8×30 meter installation at Meet d3, running from April 2-4 in Dubai.

Discover some of his best works in the gallery above.
