As Abu Dhabi’s Al Maryah island continues to undergo dramatic development with new housing, hotels, and a mega mall now populating the skyline, it is also preparing to host a spectacular celebration in honor of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Marking the beginning of a new lunar calendar in Chinese culture, the years are not traditionally numbered, but instead granted animal symbols, making 2014 the Year of the Horse. The horse, an animal also celebrated in Arab culture, embodies straightforwardness and strength, and Abu Dhabi is taking great lengths to ensure that it will be an evening to remember with a charged series of cultural events.
Stroll amongst thousands of Chinese lanterns along the waterfront promenade ,learn Chinese calligraphy skills or take kite painting lessons, and in the spirit of the lunar year, enjoy the horse whispering photo exhibition.
The Galleria shopping mall and the Rosewood luxury hotel will host traditional Chinese musical performances and hand out “lucky red” envelopes to hotel guests.
Of course, the Year of the Horse cannot be ushered in without a proper party, which is why Rosewood’s open-air lounge, Glo, will host New Year’s Eve parties on January 30th and 31st. On January 31st fireworks will illuminate Al Maryah island following a regal dragon show on the promenade.
We say: throw a saddle on this horse and enjoy the ride.
