Highway to Sustainability: Go Faster, Go Green

OSWe’re now accustomed to the ever-growing ethical and sustainable measures taken within the food, textile, and motor industries—and grateful for them—but a sustainable highway? Yes. The Abu Dhabi Department of Transport (DoT) recently announced the construction of a so-called ”Green Road”.

The five-kilometer pilot project will connect the Abu Dhabi-Dubai main roads, both the E11 and the E311, and will be the first sustainable highway ever built.

Together with its partners, the Planning Council (UPC), the Estidamma Programme Team, the Environment Agency In Abu Dhabi, and Masdar for the construction, the DoT aims to built a model road for the future, which will consist of recycled asphalt, concrete aggregates, and scarp rubber tires, according to global environmental standards.

“Upon completion of the Green Road pilot project, the outcomes will be evaluated, analyzed, and used to improve the set guidelines, as well as a rating system for future implementation of green roads throughout the Emirate of Abu Dhabi,” the DoT explained.

Construction of the world’s first eco-highway is expected for early 2015.
