Egyptian Squash Player Raneem El Welily Tops World Ranking

Egyptian sportswoman Raneem El Welily has been ranked the world’s No. 1 female squash player, making her the first Arab to hold the top spot. Following being the No. 2 female squash player for eight months, she finally broke Malaysian player Nicol Ann David’s nine-year hold and pushed her to second place. “I am so happy to have achieved something that I’ve been dreaming of ever since I was a kid,” El Welily told “It is still so hard to believe,” she continued.

The squash champion, who hails from Alexandria, started her career at the age of 12 when she represented Egypt in the World Juniors 2001 and explained that she is motivated to hold onto the No. 1 spot for as long as possible, adding, “The Egyptian women’s squash has never been stronger and I am sure that I won’t be the last Egyptian to hold this ranking.”
