Poetry in Motion: BMW i8, by Gus Van Sant

BMW enlisted the aid of renowned director Gus Van Sant (Milk, Good Will Hunting) to put together a few ads that highlight the new hybrid i8.

Admittedly, the ads might catch you off-guard with how well they are shot, but we wouldn’t expect anything less from the visionary Van Sant. Each commercial features Sam Hazeldine (Resurrection), Mickey Sumner (Sting’s daughter), and Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire) spouting poetic lines, which attribute divine-like characteristics to the new German hybrid.

In reality, the BMW i8 runs on a 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder, turbocharged engine, pushing 228-horsepower with 236 pound-feet of torque. But that’s only half of what the i8 boasts, as its hybrid motor adds an additional 129-horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, bringing the total to 357-horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, which should let you drive 600 kilometers on a single tank.

The i8 has already garnered a fervent following, with the first series of 10,000 units selling out even before the production line starts producing them. And until BMW decides to produce more, the ads are as close as any of us will get to seeing the i8 in action—so enjoy.
