Like all good things, everything started with a brief.
When describing what he wanted for the fleet of cars in Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller said to production designer Colin Gibson, “Make it cool, or I’ll kill you.” Indeed, the cars featured are cool and all the more so because they are real. This new-old aesthetic features 88 vehicles—albeit 150 were produced. The film crew scanned Australian junkyards to find the right cars “with personality” and very little technology. In fact, the cars are more or less shells.
Real cars and real people. Who doesn’t love a bit of old school now and again?
