Kite the Waj with Red Bull: Bahrain’s Kitesurfing Competition

As much as we enjoy showing off our horses and racing our camels through the desert, that doesn’t mean that we can’t also get some kicks out of strapping our feet to a board and gripping a sail for dear life as we take to the wind and waves.

Kitesurfers from the Middle East, Africa, and Europe will be sailing into Bahrain’s Amwaj Islands early next month along with Red Bull to take part in the region’s first-ever amateur kitesurfing competition.

Overseeing and judging the event will be the renowned kitesurfer Ruben Lenten, the man known for his creative freestyle abilities—specifically his signature megaloop.

Kitesurfers will begin to arrive June 3rd and will have the opportunity to spend a few days out on the water with Lenten before going head-to-head on competition day. The event will feature sixteen teams consisting of two riders each, who will compete against each other until the remaining top two riders reach the grand finale. The event’s four rounds will be categorized based on air time, grab tricks, rotations/spins, and a final free-riding round to show off the most impressive tricks. Each round will consist of eight runs, each lasting twelve minutes.

Think you have what it takes? Kite the Waj will take place on June 6th starting at 11am off the coast of the Amwaj Islands, Bahrain.
