Egyptian Actor Amir El Masry to Star in Season 5 of Netflix Series, The Crown

Egyptian-British actor Amir El Masry has been cast in Season 5 of the much-loved Netflix show, The Crown. The actor will be playing the young version of an Egyptian-British billionaire, former owner of Harrods department store, and father of Princess Diana’s romantic partner, Mohamed Al-Fayed.

Shared the announcement on Instagram, El-Masry wrote, “Feeling honored and beyond grateful to ‘The Crown’ team for having me onboard Season 5 of the series.” El-Masry will be cast alongside actors Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, and Jonny Lee Miller amongst others.

Born in Cairo in 1990, and raised in London, the actor’s career started with roles in Egyptian films, earning him a Best Young Actor at the 2009 Egyptian Cinema Oscar Festival. El-Masry also appeared in Jon Stewart’s debut feature Rosewater and several other acclaimed TV series before his breakthrough role in The Night Manager (2016), followed by Lost in London (2017), The State (2017) and Age Before Beauty (2018).

The actor has also starred in a Netflix science-fiction drama, The One, an adaptation of British author John Marr’s Novel, which was released in March 2021, prior to his upcoming role in The Crown. In 2020, he was awarded the BAFTA for Breakthrough Brit, followed by another in November 2021, when he was named the best actor in feature-length film at the BAFTA Scotland awards for his role in the 2020 film Limbo, in which he stars as a Syrian asylum seeker who finds himself living on a small Scottish island.

The Crown was first released in November 2016 and follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, along with political and romantic events that took place in the 21st century. The series has won over 130 awards, including 21 Primetime Awards, of which seven were during the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards in 2021, winning awards from all categories. The fifth season of the show is set to release in November 2022.
