Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is Official Returning in Deadpool 3 with Ryan Reynolds

Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine

It’s official. Hugh Jackman is returning as Wolverine in Deadpool 3. The announcement was made on Tuesday by none other than Ryan Reynolds, the protagonist, and anti-hero of the film, which also now has an official release date: September 26, 2023.

“Hey everyone, we’re extremely sad to have missed D23 [Expo], but we’ve been working very hard on the next Deadpool film for a good long while now,” Reynolds says in the video announcement. “I’ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning. Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside. And I…I have nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here. And terrifying. But we did have one idea.”

The video then sees Hugh Jackman nonchalantly walking by behind Reynolds, as he asks, “Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” “Yeah, sure, Ryan,” Jackman replies, before the video fades to Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’, but subtitled as “I will always love Hugh”. It’s followed by the words “Coming Hughn”,  and then the Deadpool logo which is quickly slashed by Wolverine’s claws.

Jackman has played the much-loved Marvel character in eight X-Men films since 2000, including three standalone films. He last appeared in the movie Logan in 2017.
