Post Malone streamed a live tribute to iconic band Nirvana at the weekend in the name of charity.
As one of the biggest mainstream artists of current times, his tribute to the most iconic grunge band of all time came as a bit of a surprise and Nirvana purists were skeptical. Turns out it was a treat to fans of both camps with almost 6 million views on the stream to date.
The gig has so far raised more than USD 2.7m of a target of USD 7.5m to go towards the United Nations Foundation’s Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund and Google has promised to match the donation up to USD 5m.
Joined by Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, Nick Mack on guitar and Brian Lee on bass, the rapper bashed out a 15-song tribute set, all with full backing from Krist Novoselic – former Nirvana bassist who tweeted his support.

The performance even got praised by even got the blessing of Kurt Kobain’s infamous widow, Courtney Love, who wrote on her Instagram: “Thank you @postmalone @who (worldhealthorganization) & @google who will match USD 5 million in donations.”
Malone displayed his natural and raw rock voice which is a far cry from the warble-infused over-processed style that we hear in his mainstream tracks. The remotely-synched band touched on all three of Nirvana’s studio albums and notably and nobly Smells Like Teen Spirit was intentionally absent which added credibility to the set.
