On Tuesday, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has finally unveiled the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards, set to take place on Sunday, February 24. Among the contenders is American-Egyptian actor Rami Malek, who was nominated for “Leading Actor” for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
Malek will compete against contenders Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born), Christian Bale (Vice), Viggo Mortensen (Green Book), and Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate). The Queen biopic is also in the running for the Best Picture, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing awards.
Following the Academy’s announcement of the Oscar nominations, Malek took to Twitter to express his gratitude. “Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the work of so many from the cast and crew who made all of this possible,” he wrote. “I have absolutely treasured playing Freddie Mercury and I am so profoundly humbled and thrilled to honor him this way.” Winners will be revealed at the 91st annual Academy Awards gala on Sunday, February 24, 2019.

Malek is also up for the Best Actor award at the upcoming 2019 BAFTA’s. He was nominated for Best Actor at the 2019 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, which took place earlier this month, but lost to Christian Bale.
