Saudi Arabia has announced it is to lift the ban on commercial cinemas that has been in place more than three decades. The kingdom had cinemas in the 1970s, but clerics persuaded authorities to close them.
Now, as part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 social and economic reform program, the ministry of culture and information said it would begin issuing licenses immediately and that the first cinemas were expected to open in March 2018.
The government said it expected to open more than 300 cinemas with more than 2,000 screens by 2030.
While it’s unlikely that films such as the Freddie Mercury biopic or the latest Chris Morris release will be seen in Saudi Cinemas, there are lots of big films out next year that the kingdom can look forward to.
And it’s a good excuse for us to have a look at a few of the big films coming out in March 2018 that could well be the first shown in the new Saudi cinemas.
