Saudi to Get Cinema From Early 2018 – Here Are Five Films They Can Watch

Saudi to Get Cinema

Saudi to get cinema from early next year.

Saudi Arabia has announced it is to lift the ban on commercial cinemas that has been in place more than three decades. The kingdom had cinemas in the 1970s, but clerics persuaded authorities to close them.

Now, as part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 social and economic reform program, the ministry of culture and information said it would begin issuing licenses immediately and that the first cinemas were expected to open in March 2018.

The government said it expected to open more than 300 cinemas with more than 2,000 screens by 2030.

While it’s unlikely that films such as the Freddie Mercury biopic or the latest Chris Morris release will be seen in Saudi Cinemas, there are lots of big films out next year that the kingdom can look forward to.

And it’s a good excuse for us to have a look at a few of the big films coming out in March 2018 that could well be the first shown in the new Saudi cinemas.

Tomb Raider

Reboot of the series based on the video game sees Alicia Vikander take the lead as Lara Croft, the daughter of a missing adventurer, is forced to survive when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared. Based on the 2013 PS4 version of the game.

Death Wish

Eli Roth directs the remake of the 1974 Charles Bronson film. A doctor in Chicago (Bruce Willis) becomes a vigilante when his wife is murdered and his daughter brutally attacked by robbers. It’s written by Joe Carnahan who penned The Grey, Narc and Smokin’ Aces so hopes are actually high for this one.

Red Sparrow

Spy thriller based on the book of the same name, it follows Russian intelligence officer Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) who has to stop CIA agent Nathaniel Nash (Joel Edgerton), the American mole in Russia.

Pacific Rim: Uprising

Sequel to 2012’s Pacific Rim. Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat. All you really need to know is that it’s like Transformers versus Japanese monsters.

Ready Player One

Hugely anticipated sci-fi film from Steven Spielberg in which the creator of a virtual reality world called the OASIS dies and releases a video in which he challenges all users to find his fortune hidden in the game.
