The Big Lebowski Turns 20, But The Dude’s Cardigan is Timeless

The Big Lebowski

Sometimes there’s a man… I won’t say a hero, ’cause, what’s a hero? But sometimes, there’s a man. The Big Lebowski turns 20 years old on March 6, and the Coen Brothers comedy take on the great Los Angeles noir films of the past is rightly considered a classic. It’s even a true cult classic with Jeff Bridges’ character The Dude attaining a genuine following – Duedism.

Jeff Bridges wore his own clothes for this role – friends say he’s pretty much like the Dude in real life – and though there were two sweaters handknitted as backups, he preferred wearing his own and the laid-back demeanor and style of The Dude featured him a big chunky zip-up cardigan.

The piece is called the Westerly and is made by the American brand Pendleton Woolen Mills. Pendleton have been around since starting out in Oregon in the early 1900s, and this style debuted in 1972, but when The Dude wore an original in the film The Big Lebowski, fans clamored for a comeback so it was re-made and released in late 2014 and is currently available to buy, down to every last color and detail.

Pendleton say, “This is 100% lambswool in 3gg knit, and it’s ready to take you through your next monsoon, or maybe to your next Lebowskifest. We’ve even restored the ring zipper pull, to which we’ve attached a small bowling pin keychain. We think it really pulls the sweater together.”
