Just when we thought cinema trips were to remain but a distant dream, Dubai’s Urban Entertainment has come up with a genius solution. With social distancing still very much a thing, a trip to the regular cinema is out of the question for the foreseeable, but how about a drive-in screening?
The entertainment company is known for hosting outdoor screenings as a staple during Dubai’s cooler months at its Habtoor Grand location in the past, but these have been put on hold recently for obvious public health reasons. The next best thing is harking back to the 1950s with a drive-in style cinema experience on the cards.
The company already offers a drive-in cinema experience for private events and has plans to launch in Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah very soon. While the Urban Outdoor Cinema has traditionally used wireless headphones, the drive-in concept uses FM frequency technology to transmit the soundtrack directly to your car radio. Neat!

Urban Entertainment chief executive Michael Heyes commented: “We are currently working on several projects across the UAE where we will be looking to implement drive-in cinemas. We feel now is the perfect time to launch this – especially as social distancing will still be important as restrictions on outdoor events start to relax.” Heyes went on to reassure patrons that food, snacks, and drinks will be available and delivered to your car, which will mean you can still have an authentic cinema experience while still maintaining social distancing guidelines.
The long-term idea is to keep this idea running way beyond the coronavirus threat as the company intends to extend this offering beyond the current situation.
Stayed tuned for launch dates.
