Every Man Should Own: Orlebar Brown Shorts

It’s getting hotter now and we’re entering the perfect time in the region to spend afternoons in and out of swimming pools. But let’s do this in some style.

Most swimming shorts look no different from those that a five-year old would wear. It’s a weird field in clothing where a grown man and his five-year-old son can wear the same things and nobody is going to bat an eyelid. In fact, Vilbriquin released a whole campaign around this. But some shorts are a cut above and Orlebar Brown make great shorts.

Orlebar Brown has been making superior swimming shorts since 2007. Founded by photographer Adam Brown who identified a gap in the market for smart men’s swimwear, and it’s the use of photographs with the all over print is the one to go for. It’s a chance to wear something a little bit more distinctive without heading out into the wacky territory of Bermuda shorts.

The metal clasps on the side let you adjust the waistband for a neater fit, without the need for an ungainly drawstring. There’s a back pocket with hidden inside zip to ensure keys don’t get lost when you’re bombing/diving/petting/breaking rules and they have regular side pockets for when you’re using them out of the pool.

If you want to spend a bit more then you can design your own and upload a high-res image of your choosing and they will print them up for you. Or you can leave it to the experts…

Some of the older releases – and a couple in the current range – from Orlebar Brown use old images from Slim Aarons, the photographer who captured the essence of wealthy people enjoying summer. It’s a lovely way to wear some of the photos that epitomize the sort of loafing in style that you’ll be trying to do in your new OB shorts.
