In the coolest collision of the worlds of fashion and music, Colombian reggaeton artist Juan Luis London Arias, famously known and Maluma and French fashion house Balmain have announced a special limited-edition collaboration. With an undeniably Miami-esque style, the collection combines graphics that define the 80s and 90s with Maluma’s distinctive look that is associated with him as much as upbeat music is.
This is not the first time the artist has collaborated with the fashion house. After Olivier Rousteing took the reigns at Balmain, unfolding a new chapter adorned with vibrant colors and eye-catching patterns, Maluma joined forces with the creative director to create a one-of-a-kind tropical-inspired look for last year’s Video Music Awards.
Their latest collaboration sees the genre of reggaeton come to life in the form of garments. The intersection of the two worlds is seen in neon colors on graphic tees and hoodies, maze-like patterns, monochrome pinstripe ensembles, and chunky sneakers with gold accents. It is also an extension of Maluma’s most recent album, Papi Juancho, as they simultaneously speak of the 80s and 90s eras in Miami.
Alongside the collection, the duo has released an intangible gift — the cherry on top to complete the Miami-esque aesthetic — an Apple Music playlist with a selection of tunes that the two put together during this collaboration.
“It’s been one of my goals to work with a respected fashion house on a collection, but this journey was more exciting, as Olivier pushed me to design with him and sketch looks that I personally will wear off the stage and showcase high couture with a bit of Papi Juancho,” said Maluma in a statement. “This process was exciting as I have always dreamt to design one day, and I was happy to have a friend like Olivier let me express creatively through fashion.”
