Zayn Makes the Case for Nintendo Merch as a Style Statement

A post shared by Zayn Malik (@zayn) on

Zayn Malik’s look is ever-evolving. The pop star fearlessly switches hair colors and clothing styles to suit his mood, but his latest fashion update might be his most interesting. Yesterday, in an Instagram snapshot from an idyllic countryside getaway with on-again girlfriend Gigi Hadid, he wore a lavender tee with the ‘Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ logo. Though he probably would have been too young to play the original version—the Nintendo 64 game hit shelves in 1998, when Malik was only five—the video game reference was an interesting style choice. His lilac buzz cut matched both his t-shirt and the field of flowers behind him, taking monochrome to a new level.

While merch is nothing new as a style statement, the idea of wearing your favorite video game across your chest remains somewhat novel in fashion circles. In other words, though shoppers still seek out t-shirts from bands they’ve never listened to, it may be a while before street style stars latch onto the idea of Overwatch hoodies and Fallout IV windbreakers. Always ahead of the curve, Malik may have stumbled upon the next great menswear trend—or simply found a chic option for chilling at home with a controller in hand.
