The internet has been obsessed with Margot Robbie’s wardrobe in Barbie, from Viviene Westwood couture at the premiere in London to Chanel ensembles in the movie. However, a surprising detail that many might have missed is the exclusive ski suit worn by Ryan Gosling as Ken.
Jacqueline Durran, the Oscar-winning costume director for the movie who has previously worked on titles such as Atonement and Little Women, told People that the ski suits Barbie and Ken wore on their way to the real world from Barbieland were also Chanel. While both suits were custom-made for the actors, the one that Gosling wore was truly one-of-a-kind.
“Chanel sent over the suit for Margot to put on and it was just great, but the thing is, we also needed one for Ryan. And Chanel doesn’t make menswear,” shared Durran. “So Chanel kind of went, ‘Okay, well, we’ll make one for Ryan.’ So they made the only Chanel men’s ski suit in existence for Ryan.”
She admitted that most people might have known that the actors wore Chanel in that scene but it was unlikely that many of them realized just how monumental it was. The French luxury fashion house has traditionally been focused on women with menswear being extremely rare. “People just didn’t pick up on that,” Durran added. “Chanel doesn’t do menswear!”
