The Last Mercedes G-Wagen… For Now?

G65 Final Edition

Mercedes-AMG G65 Final Edition

The G-Wagen range of cars from Mercedes has been hugely popular in the GCC, not least because members of the UAE Royal Family themselves drive them. (The Dubai car registration plate number one? It’s on a white G-Wagen).

But the run has come to an end and Mercedes-AMG have claimed that the G65 Final Edition will be the last model made.

With the all new G-Class vehicles on the way from Mercedes, the brand has decided to send the G-Wagen off in style with this Final Edition, limited to just 65 cars worldwide. And Mercedes don’t believe that the  hefty $364,000 price tag will put people off.

Notable touches include 21-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels in bronze, a color also appearing in the underride guard, bumper trim and side view mirrors. Inside, the black Nappa leather and carbon fiber trim are also augmented by bronze stitching.

The Seat Comfort package, includes heated and cooled multi-contour and climatized front seats, just to remind you that despite being a boxy SUV, it can still carry some of the luxury features you find in the high-end sedans from Mercedes.

First introduced in 1979, the G-Wagen model has become one on of the standard bearers for high-quality, high-power SUVs and this version, like its predecessors, has a near-unnecessary amount power. The hefty AMG 6.0L V12 engine, producing 630 hp, will give it a 0-60 time of roughly five seconds, and a top speed over 140 mph.

Despite the title of Final Edition, however, it is strongly suspected that it may be making a comeback of sorts fairly soon, albeit in a totally new guise, with a new G-class in the pipeline.

For now though, this is a rather lovely way to say goodbye to one of the most iconic cars from Mercedes and a Middle East icon of driving.
