It has been officially confirmed by the Civil Defence Department that 75% of the city of Dubai has now been disinfected as part of the ongoing National Sterilization Programme.
The department’s round-the-clock sanitization campaign has now reached a vast majority of the city since it first came into effect on April 4, 2020. It has included 490 field visits to labour camps across the Emirates and is said to have benefitted more than 161,977 workers already as a direct result of the initiative.

In a statement by Major General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi, director of Dubai Civil Defense, he spoke of how his teams have focused on treating the most densely populated areas of the city.
“Our teams sterilised labour camps and spread awareness by teaching workers the hygiene skills to protect themselves from COVID-19.”, he said. “We educated the workers by placing stickers in their accommodation on how to protect themselves from the virus.”
At the weekend, Dubai’s Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management announced that the sterilization programme would be extended for another week through until the beginning of Ramadan.
The move for an extension was based on a careful assessment of the impact of measures in the last two weeks, in coordination with the Command and Control Centre for Combating COVID-19.

The committee continues to closely monitor the results of the intensified restrictions on the movement of people and vehicles. These measures have accelerated the efforts to combat COVID-19, enabled sterilisation operations to be carried out on a larger scale and allowed medical teams to conduct extensive testing in densely populated areas. The extension of sterilization is, therefore, the direct result of the overall success of the programme until now which has played a huge role in curtailing the spread of the virus across the city.
