A magnificent back-heeled pass by former Vogue Man Arabia cover star Karim Benzema yesterday sees Real Madrid edge closer to taking the Spanish league with a 1-0 win at Espanyol. The sweet move by the French-Algerian footballer enabled a goal by Casemiro meaning Real Madrid took a two-point lead over Barcelona at the top of La Liga.
Using a knife-sharp, no-look pass with his heel, the ball fired through the defense of Bernardo Espinosa just before halftime to complete Casemiro’s move straight into the belly of the goal.
“It’s a very important win,” said Benzema. “The assist is good, but Casemiro puts it in and gave us the three points.”
Casemiro’s strike and some flawless defending were all Madrid needed to win and climb two points at the top of the table ahead of Barcelona.
“I see things, that is what football is to me,” Benzema said about the goal. “I can’t say we don’t look at Barcelona, of course, we do. But we’re focused on our own league. There are not many games left and every game now is a final.” he continued.
His teammate was quick to share the praise: “I have to give huge credit to Karim,” said Casemiro. “It was an incredible assist. We’re used to how good he is, I know the quality he possesses so I was expecting something. He heard me asking for it and he played it in a brilliant way.”
Coronavirus has continued to keep fans away from stadiums but it has not stopped the action as the great game resumed play in Spain two weeks ago. Games are being scheduled every three days in order to finish the season by July 19 as a result of the delays due to the pandemic.
