His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai has expressed his condolences on the death of Dr Ahmed Kazim, known as the first Emirati doctor. The doctor dedicated 50 years of his life to the service and medical care of many people.

His Highness shared his condolences on Twitter with the doctor’s family: “Five decades of his life he spent in serving people, treating them and curing their pain. He has all our praise and appreciation. We ask God to reward him with goodness and dwell in heaven. Amen.”

His daughter, the UAE’s first female surgeon Dr Houriya Kazim also paid her tribute to him as a doctor and a paternal figure through a quote by philosopher Lawrence Pearsall Jack: “Physicians who are masters in the art of medicine make little distinction between their work and their play, their labor and their leisure, their mind and their body, their education and their recreation, their love and their religion. They hardly know which is which and simply pursue whatever they do with excellence and grace, leaving others to decide whether they are working or playing. To them they are always doing both.”

Dr Kazim graduated with a medical degree in 1951, from Bombay University, and started his momentous career in 1955, working as a casualty officer in Trinidad. In 1958, he went on to advance his studies in Britain, becoming a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Scotland as well as England in 1975.  He returned to Trinidad after obtaining his fellowship and served as a senior orthopedic surgeon. He commenced his practice in Dubai in 1977 as an orthopedic surgeon in Rashid Hospital, going on to become a consultant orthopedic surgeon, and then later moving on to Dubai Hospital. From 1982 till his retirement in 2004, he headed the orthopedic department at Dubai Hospital. He was honored among UAE pioneers in 2014 as the first Emirati doctor, which ensured that his name was preserved amongst other pioneers in government archives, as well as an annual government book.
